Sweden Q2 Current Account Surplus Widens Sharply
Swedish current account surplus widened sharply to SEK 37.0 billion in the second quarter of 2019 from SEK 0.8 billion in the same period of the previous year. The goods surplus rose to SEK 44.0 billion from SEK 16.1 billion a year earlier and the services surplus increased to SEK 5.2 billion from SEK 4.9 billion. Additionally, the primary income deficit narrowed to SEK 3.8 billion from SEK 10.4 billion a year ago, mainly due to income on investment and the secondary income shortfall fell to SEK 8.5 billion from SEEK 9.8 billion.

Sweden Current Account Surplus Largest Since 2008
Swedish current account surplus rose to SEK 62.7 billion in the first quarter of 2019 from SEK 17.6 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year. It was the largest current account surplus since Q3 2008, as the services account recorded a SEK 7.7 billion surplus swinging from a SEK 1.1 billion deficit a year ago while the goods surplus increased to SEK 45.6 billion from SEK 23.5 billion. Also, the primary income surplus widened to SEK 41.5 billion from SEK 21 billion, mainly due to the income on portfolio investments. Meanwhile, the secondary income deficit rose to SEK 32.2 billion from SEK 25.8 billion in Q1 2018.

Sweden Current Account Surplus Largest in 2 Years
Swedish current account surplus rose to SEK 39.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018 from a downwardly revised SEK 35.5 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year. It is the largest current account surplus since Q4 2016, as the services surplus increased to SEK 23.2 billion from SEK 13 billion a year earlier, on higher sales of research and development services and data services. Also, the primary income surplus widened to SEK 24.6 billion from SEK 20.3 billion, mainly due to the return on portfolio investments and direct investment. Meanwhile, the goods surplus decreased to SEK 16.4 billion from SEK 21.5 billion and the secondary income deficit went up to SEK 24.7 billion from SEK 19.3 billion in Q4 2017. In 2018, the country's current account surplus narrowed to SEK 93.8 billion from SEK 127.6 billion a year ago.
